Research Context

This study aims to review a selection of relevant literature which examines the 'school-to-prison pipeline' phenomenon identified in the USA and compare literature which examines the links between school exclusion and youth justice in the UK to identify any trends or similarities between the two contexts.

Research Methodology

A judgement sample of literature will be taken including an equal number of articles written and published in the UK and USA (approx. 10 documents).  A detailed critical review of the literature followed by a detailed content analysis will be used to answer 3 main research questions.

The research questions seek to identify:

  • any perceived causes of the StPP phenomenon in both the UK and USA;
  • any social factors which place particular groups of young people at risk of entry into the pipeline(e.g, race, poverty, age, geography) and;
  • implications on practise for education and law enforcement agencies.
