Introducing the College Bursary Scheme 2017-18

Officers and staff are invited to apply for funding for higher education studies as the second College Bursary Scheme is launched.

Applications for the College bursary scheme 2017/18 have now closed.

Following the success of last year's bursary scheme, we are now launching our 2017/18 scheme and invite officers and staff in England and Wales to apply to the College for funding to support their higher education tuition fees.

Bursaries will support those who are already studying, or are looking to start a course from autumn 2017. The scheme promotes a policing culture which values continuing learning, and where our members are equipped with the appropriate skills and knowledge to make decisions based on the best available evidence.

Grants of up to £3,000 a year are for tuition fees only and the funding can be used to cover up to two years of study, with a maximum award of £6,000 per student.

In last year's scheme, 26 applicants received bursaries with over half awarded to police constables and sergeants and a further seven going to members of police staff. These awards are supporting learning and research on a wide range of policing and crime reduction topics such as cyber-security, criminology, leadership and psychology at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Acting Detective Sergeant Robert Ewin from Cumbria Constabulary received funding to support his PhD at the University of Cumbria exploring criminal justice responses to vulnerable victims and witnesses. He recognises many transferable skills between his study and his work as a police officer:

"In doing research you come across real world problems and with some sense of your own knowledge and understanding can influence practice with some well-established and tested methods. This knowledge is not gained without looking beyond the organisation and I hope that in seeing how others perform similar tasks, sometimes to achieve a better result, my colleagues will also benefit from my study."

This year's scheme is only open to police officers and staff who are registered as members of the College. Further information on College membership and how to join can be found on our Membership site.
