Training essentials programme (TEP)

Providing you with the knowledge and skills to deliver effective face-to-face and online training in a policing environment.

This programme is for people who deliver training in their role and must meet police sector training standards. 

The programme consists of:

  • three core modules delivered on our College sites
  • an optional fourth module delivered remotely

Choosing your modules

Combinations of the modules will allow you to meet different police sector training standards. You should attend the modules that best meet your needs.

To meet the police sector training standards for:

  • trainers – you should complete modules one, two and three
  • trainers and online facilitators – you should complete all four modules
  • presenters – you should complete module one
  • online presenters – you should complete modules one and four

Online facilitators who already meet the police sector standards for trainers or presenters should complete module four.

Module one – training knowledge essentials

Learn what you need to know to deliver engaging and impactful police learning and development.

Module two – training skills essentials

Develop practical training tools and techniques to motivate and inspire your learners.

Module three – training practice essentials

Learn how to design and deliver interactive learning and development sessions.

Module four – online facilitation essentials

Develop your facilitation skills in an online environment, so you can deliver engaging and effective online learning.

Practitioner group

Those in policing roles who are required to meet one or more of the police sector standards. These include:

 

  • presenters
  • instructors
  • trainers
  • online facilitators
Duration

Core modules are run over four and a half days.

Online facilitation essentials (optional) is run over four days.

Accreditation notes:

While this course provides the required knowledge for a Level 4 teaching qualification, the College cannot accredit this for external candidates. You may be eligible for accreditation through recognition for prior learning (RPL) with an awarding body if the qualification is available in your local area.

Cost

The 2025 prices for modules one to three are:

 

  • £1,440 (plus accommodation) – for Home Office forces
  • £3,259 – for non-Home Office forces

 

The cost of module four is to be confirmed.
